Just thought I'd let everyone know that I have applied to my first scaper job! It's a local greenhouse/nursery that does a little bit of interiorscaping for other local businesses and organizations. Wish me luck!

Italirican2003 (c'mon, now, you've been around here long enough to use your REAL name, right?)...congratulations!  That's pretty similar to how I started in the biz...I worked as an orchid and tropical plant grower for a small greenhouse operation in NJ that had "shops" in indoor markets (converted from belly-up department store buildings) on the weekends and did some wholesale and interiorscaping the rest of the week.  It's good to see various sides of the industry in the early part of your career...you never know which direction you'll ultimately travel, but the experience will stand you in good stead regardless.  Best of luck with your first gig!

Haha, it's Angelo. Is there a way for me to change my user name to my real name without having to delete my current account and create a new one?

I tried to do it with my own settings, but couldn't change the username, so I guess not.  But now we know your first name, at least.

Just an update on the potential job: I just called the company and asked where they currently were with their hiring process. (It's been a week since I applied.) The woman I talked to said they were still reviewing the apps/resumes and that mine had been reviewed and was "on the list"! That's good news! The deadline to turn in apps is March 15th. I'll let you guys know then if I got the job or not. Keep wishing me luck!

They called me today! I have an interview Friday morning! Keep sending the luck!

Be sure to come prepared with a bunch of sharp questions about the company you're applying to...interviewers like that you've done your research and aren't just using the shotgun approach to apply for any job out there.

Break a leg!

I got the job! I don't think I'll be doing any interiorscaping at first, but once I convince them to keep me as a permanent employee (it's a seasonal job with a chance of staying on) I'm sure I can get the interiorscaping bit!

Let me be the first to congratulate you and wish you all the best!

I remember thinking I'd lose weight when I first In actuality, the reverse happened...what I ate got less healthy!  I knew where every vending machine and fast food place was...anything quick.  Don't fall into that trap!

That's why I got my new eBags Crew Cooler (fancy airline crew lunchbox)...I can pack a healthy lunch and beverages, as well as supplies (pens, band-aids, small tools, bluetooth headset, etc.) for the day.  Otherwise, it's gonna be pizza and Big Macs...

Somehow a word of my last posting got deleted.  It was supposed to read:

"I remember thinking I'd lose weight when I first started teching.  "

Well, I just got my review. It went very well. Got a nice raise. They only had good things to say about me and my work. And, the owner kept saying I'd make a good manager in the future. I just wish we had more interiorscape clients. We only have three now, so I only do it on Wednesdays and it only takes about 3 hours. So, all the other days I just work in the greenhouse. I'll be staying on as a permanent employee. I just hope I get enough hours so I can quit my other job and finish my last year at school.

You sound exactly like I did when I got my first job in the industry working at a small orchid and tropical foliage greenhouse near campus when I was finishing my last year at Rutgers.  It will all come in time...maybe you could ask your boss for ways you could try to generate more interiorscape business while you're on the job.  Couldn't hurt!
